SKYLIGHT TERMINOLOGY
- L frame curb mount skylight: aluminum frame, acrylic
dome(s) skylight that requires a curb above the roof to mount
on. Outside wood curb dimension required to order skylight.
- Self-flashing skylight: aluminum frame, acrylic dome(s)
skylight that installs over flush opening in the roof. Inside
opening dimension required to order skylight.
- Replacement domes: A damaged dome may be removed from
most aluminum frame skylights & replaced with a new dome.
Dimensions required are: length, width, height & flap lid
width of dome.
- Bottom frame: Aluminum frame that support the domes, has
condensation gutter & weep holes to drain any moisture to the
outside of skylight.
- Retaining frame: Aluminum angle that goes over dome lip &
fastens to bottom frame to secure dome to bottom frame.
- Curb: A wood box built above the roof & flashed to set a
curb mount type skylight on.
- Flashing: Sheet metal that extends from top of wood curb
down the side bent at 90 degrees to extend at least 6" under
roofing material. May be step flashed with each layer of
shinges up sides.
- Tunnel: Opening that extends from roof to ceiling to allow
light into house from skylight.
